Workshop #:WS0906-09

Painting by Alesha Davies FowlieWorkshop Times:9:30 to 3:30

Workshop Description:Given the great enthusiasm for watercolour painting, we thought we'd like to offer a watercolour painting workshop with a twist. This workshop combines watercolour paint and Yupo paper as well as showing you a monoprinting technique.

Yupo synthetic paper offers a bright white unique painting surface quite different from traditional absorbent watercolor papers. Because the paint dries by evaporation rather than absorption, it is necessary to take a completely different approach to the painting process in order to achieve any kind of control or detail.

You will explore how loose washes of color react on the paper. Using special lifting and burnishing techniques, students will utilize a variety of tools such as sponge rollers, tissue papers, spray bottles, stencils, stamps as well as brushes to apply paint to enhance the surface.

As well as the numerous creative possibilities that Yupo offers with direct painting techniques, this slick non-porous surface also makes an ideal monotype plate. On Sunday, students will explore various monoprinting techniques using Yupo paper and soft printmaking papers.

Materials List

Please bring all your watercolour painting supplies: An artist quality or good student quality of transparent watercolor paint in tube form (pan sets do not provide the thickness of paint we will need).

You will also need a palette and a selection of round and flat watercolor brushes and containers for holding water. If you are interested in experimentation you may also want to bring colored inks or gouache.

Tools

  • a spray bottle for water
  • a small squeeze bottle for adding clean water
  • a box of Kleenex or roll of toilet paper
  • A clean old towel
  • A roll of paper towel
  • A large spoon or printmaking brayer
  • One or more watercolor pencils or crayons
  • One or more small sponge paint rollers (available in hardware or dollar stores).

Paper

The instructor will have Yupo Paper available for purchase, but you can bring your own if you have it.

For the monotype portion, please bring one or more sheets of the following:

  • a soft printmaking paper such as Arches 88
  • a heavy rice paper such as Mulberry or Watercolor Paper such as Arches cold or hot press (sheets may be smaller than full size, even small scraps are fine if you don't mind working small).

Bring any image sources such as photos or ideas for your paintings.

Instructor will bring stamps, stencils and special paper scraps for sharing.
