Ramsay House by Dianne BerseaBring your paints, palettes and easels for two days of outdoor painting in downtown Denman Island. Paint the scene and be a part of the scenery during Denman Island's Celebrating Our Own Festival and Studio Tour.

Dianne will demonstrate quick and bold techniques in watercolour (paint, crayon and pencil) to capture the essence of the village experience. Learn to see in large areas of colour and shape that translates quickly and easily to the painting surface. Experiment with subjective colour and unusual perspectives while building strong compositions and having fun in the process.

This is an ideal workshop for breaking through the anxiety of putting brush to paper, for building confidence in an outdoor setting, and developing some solid painting technique using wet washes and a variety of water media. Each day wraps with a gallery and review of our work.

  • Watercolour paper - I recommend dArches 140 lb. medium surface paper
but any artists quality paper will be fine, although results vary
    significantly from paper to paper.
  • Blocks: Size optional but 11 x 14 or larger are good. Very handy format.
  • Sheets: sheet size 22 x 30.Can be torn down for smaller sizes
this is a less expensive way to buy paper, but you will need a board or
other support to tape down the paper.
  • Watercolour palette- covered palette with lots of mixing area
  • Watercolour paints- tubes or pans of good quality. I prefer Windsor
Newton artist quality - excellent for colour brilliance, permanence and ease of mixing. Almost all colours can be created from this simple collection. Cotman by Windsor Newton are good as a less costly substitute.
  • Basic palette, one each of:
    • Alizarin Crimson (permanent)
    • Ultramarine Blue (may come in red or blue shade, either is fine)
    • Windsor Yellow or Cobalt Yellow (look for a cool yellow)
    • Cadmium Red Medium
    • Windsor Blue, Prussian Blue or Pthalo Blue (a warm blue)
    • Cadmium Yellow Medium
  • Watercolour brushes- the absolute minimum THREE brushes:
    • a 1/2 flat
    • a size 10 round
    • a mop or large Chinese flat.
  • Otherwise, bring:
    • a selection of flats - 1/2, 3/4 or 1
    • rounds, size 10 and larger
    • a mop or Chinese flat, one inch or larger, Bigger Brushes are Better!

Artist ImageThe diverse bounty of Georgia Strait and its islands has instilled a deep reverence for wildness and natural beauty and inspired Dianne's creative muse. Through the guided medium of her brush Dianne celebrates life, atmospheric phenomena, the joy of discovery and other natural wonders.

Dianne is a frequent contributor to Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) juried shows at the Granville Island Federation Gallery, has participated in Provincial and National shows conducted by the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC), and established her reputation with a well received solo show at the Campbell River Public Art Gallery in 1999.

Dianne enjoys sharing her love of our fabulous west coast and her watercolour tricks of the trade. Hollyhock, Malibu Arts Retreat, Firesign Art & Design and many private workshop situations have been enlivened with Dianne's presentations. Its wonderful to see eyes light up with awareness. That's the perk for her as an instructor. With an emphasis on the magic of seeing, Dianne simplifies the watercolour process with gentle clarity and humour.

Dianne lives, works and shares Manzanita Muse Studio with sculptor/artisan Jodi Forster on Cortes Island.
