Copper Weaving and Metalwork

Join instructor Mary Hicks in a two-day introductory metal weaving workshop.
The course has been designed for beginners to explore basic techniques in copper weaving, hammering, annealing, and colouring with heat and patina mixtures.
Copper is a beautiful, versatile, and forgiving metal to work with. You will explore the dynamic medium of metal and create a woven copper piece.

Materials provided:
- Stucco wire (frame)
- various weaving materials
- copper foil (recycled)
- copper wire
- willow
- bamboo
The following equipment will be available for student use in class:
- propane torches for coloring copper (student fee will cover propane cost)
- pruning shears
- wire cutters
- two anvils (to use in class for hammering)
- safety gear (goggles/rubber gloves)
Students should bring:
- large pliers (textured, heavy duty, with rubber/plastic grips)
- small pliers (non-textured, flat nose)
- scissors
- hammer

Mary Hicks
Mary Hicks is an Alumni of California Institute of the Arts and has been a working artist for over 22 years.
Photography has been an important focus for her, combined with a recent and intensive exploration of the medium of metal. Forming, coloring and weaving copper is one of Marys passions.
She is currently working on large-scale mixed media sculptures that incorporate woven photographs, metalwork, and natural/found objects.
