Course Description:Complete two small baskets using a variety of techniques using materials gathered and grown locally.

On the first day students will weave a small rectangular basket using a form to shape the basket. Bulrush, cedar bark and leaves from the garden will be used. This basket will dry overnight and be finished the next morning.

The small round basket woven on the second day will be constructed free form of similar materials.

Students will learn several techniques of basketry that can be used for a variety of baskets. Information about gathering, growing, storing and preparing natural materials will be discussed.

Instructor will provide:

  • weaving materials
  • small clamps
  • a bodkin
  • forms and other items

Students should bring:

  • small sharp scissors
  • a couple of towels
  • a bucket
  • a plastic bag
  • a spray bottle with water

Basket making with Marilyn JensenMarilyn Jensen is a prolific fiber artist working in many mediums.

From spinning and weaving, she developed an interest in basketry and using materials gathered from her garden and the forests and beaches of Denman Island.

Her work has been shown in Vancouver, Victoria, Courtenay and Denman Island where she is a highly respected craftsperson.
