Course DescriptionAs any writer knows, much of the work of writing is re-writing. Applying the tools that editors use can help focus that process, making it more efficient and productive.

Whether your manuscript-in-progress is a memoir or a novel, a picture book or a YA one, a collection of essays or a selection of poems, it must be built upon a framework. We will consider various structural models, seeking the best for each writer’s work.

Each day’s sessions will include a variety of exercises – ones to sharpen editing skills as well as warm-ups and prompts for writing. We will proceed from self-editing to directed edits on each other’s work. We will share those results in a controlled, non-threatening environment of supportive but useful workshopping.

Other topics will include selecting a publisher, submitting a manuscript, and considering the option of self-publishing. Time permitting, other matters that emerge from the wishes of the group will be considered.

The sessions will culminate in a public event where each writer will have the opportunity to present a short reading of their work.

Salon

On the last evening, Saturday, February 20, Heidi will be reading at a public salon along with the workshop participants who choose the opportunity to present a short reading of their work.

Work to Bring:

Even though we won’t get through entire manuscripts, participants are expected to bring some of their work. Because workshopping will be part of the process, everyone is asked to select a short excerpt (maximum of 3 pages) of the manuscript they want to work on. This sample should be double-spaced (unless it is poetry). Once we know how many register for the workshop, we will inform you how many copies you should make and bring to Denman (one for each workshop member, including yourself, plus one for the instructor).

Editor Heidi Greco brings more than two decades’ experience working with manuscripts in many genres.

In addition, she is a writer whose work has been published in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Her book reviews, essays, poetry and fiction can be found online, in magazines and newspapers.
