Hand Painted Tile Murals

Course Description Explore a variety of techniques for surface design on ceramics. Each student will create one 12” x 12” ceramic tile mural consisting of nine 4” x 4” tiles, and one 8” x 8” ceramic tile mural made up of four 4” tiles, suitable for mounting or installation.
The workshop will begin with discussion of the history of the art tile and the basics of surface design, followed by instruction on adapting imagery to the medium. Students will work up their motifs on paper, and then learn methods for transferring imagery to the ceramic surface.
After a discussion and demonstration of various surface design techniques, including underglaze painting and drawing, wax resist, stenciling, and glaze painting, students will choose the two techniques they want to work with, and get to work on their murals. Many materials and most equipment will be provided, including bisqued ceramic tiles, underglazes, glazes, and resists. The finished murals will be fired at the Lingua Terra Tile studio.
Supplies Provided
- 16 bisqued 4” ceramic tiles
- underglazes, resists, and glazes
- graph paper and transfer paper
- some brushes
- firing of finished pieces
Supplies to Bring:
- a variety of paintbrushes, including at least one very fine liner, several small watercolour type brushes, two or three larger heavy duty brushes, and one small brush you are willing to sacrifice. The brushes will suffer some wear and tear.
- one or two pairs of disposable latex gloves
- some newspaper
- a clean plastic or styrofoam egg carton
- sketching materials including large paper, tracing paper, drawing pencils, a few felt tip or technical pens, and a ruler
- some imagery you’d like to work with -- this need not be complete -- bring sketches,
photos, ideas, inspirations

Bronwyn Simons is the founder of, and designer for Lingua Terra Tile, an art tile company launched in 2003.
Before founding Lingua Terra, Bronwyn worked as a designer and muralist for 15 years.
She is passionate about surface design, the revival of craft, and about the importance of integrating the handmade into our homes and daily lives.
