Introduction to Printmaking
Workshop Dates:Fri (evening)/Sat Feb 15 - 16, 2008
Workshop Fees:$75 + $25 Materials Fee
Workshop #:WS0802-01
Course Times:Friday evening 7:30, Sat: 9:30 to 3:30
Course Description: Long before the printing press was invented, printmaking was a medium for communication. Linocut is a printmaking technique similar to woodcut. The engraved image is rich in texture and depth. Disregarded by serious artists initially, the linocut came into its own after Picasso and Matisse began to work with that technique. Lino-cut prints are created through an intensive and exciting process.
In this introductory workshop we will be using a single block multiple colour and carving process resulting in one printed image. Since each colour is printed individually, the results of the final print are both surprising and inspiring. All levels - no previous experience necessary for this workshop.
Students should bring an image to the workshop that they would like to use for design inspiration.
The instructor will provide all other materials.

Richard Calver
Born in England, Richard Calver immigrated to Canada in 1965 and in his 30’s began studying printmaking with Sybil Andrews. As a part time gardener, the natural form of botanical images has become a favorite subject in his prints.
The effect of movement, achieved through the use of strong diagonals and undulating lines, is an important component in all of his compositions. Calver often produces editions of as many as fifty or sixty prints, a process involving many hours of exacting work.
Richard Calver's prints are exhibited and sold at galleries across Canada, including the Winchester Gallery in Victoria and Mayberry Fine Art in Winnipeg. He lives on Quadra Island.
