Workshop Dates:Sat Oct 18 - Sun Oct 19, 2009

Workshop Fees:$135

Workshop #:WS0910-21

Workshop Times:10:00 to 4:00

Improv Workshop Description:The process of improvisation is based on a combination of personal creativity and simple structural tools. Participants will learn to listen to and “get in touch” with the feel and foundation of the music. A series of exercises will help increase personal musical responses and encourage students to use their ears and feelings to improvise on various musical structures.

Improvisation methods will be explored using the foundation of melody, chords, scales, chord patterns, guide tones, tonal repetitions, ear training, and melodic and rhythmic “riffs”. Musical styles will include chants, gospel, folk, blues, R& B, Latin, world beat, and jazz. Students will learn to use the basics of chord and scale theory, but concentration will be on using your ear to create original and personal inventive responses to chord and melodic structures and patterns.

Participants do not need to be able to read music, but a basic working knowledge of your instrument is needed. People who do not play an instrument can learn these techniques by using their voice and simple rhythmic instruments.

Materials Provided by Instructor

  • 1$ materials fee will be collected in class to cover the cost of photocopies.

Students should bring

  • Bring your instruments, your voice or rhythmic instruments. A piano will be available but keyboard players who have their own portable instruments should bring them. Electric guitar and bass players will need their own amplifiers or arrange to share.

Note: When you are registering, please indicate what instrument (or vocal) you are bringing to class.
